Well for all of those who wondered (1?) and were too shy to guess, the answer was TYMPANOMETER! A tympanometer is used to detect disorders of the middle ear (the portion of the ear behind the "ear drum" that transmits sounds to the inner portion of the ear for interpretation) by measuring the response of the ear to different sounds and pressures.

A tympanometer might reveal fluid built up behind the ear drum, impacted ear wax, a perforated ear drum, or even a tumor in the middle ear.

Based on the results, the doctor (theoretically) has more information to appropriately treat a patient's ear problem.

Even in the throws of cold and flu season I never saw anyone use this instrument Perhaps it is only used in those upscale private practices or by ear, nose and throat docs.

Anyways, now you too are in the "know".
