Because that's what Grams are for...

During my "Gram's" recent 2-week hospitalization for a L knee replacement, she and her roommate began scheming together about who they were going to set me up with in the hospital. First, it was the cute physical therapist who was a decade my senior. Then, it was the smiley nurse, who turned out to be married with children. Finally, she and Janet found "Sydney", a young CNA - Gram's "favorite evening nurse", about my age, no kids, and single to boot.

One night while visiting with my Aunt Kathy and Gram in her room, Gram in mid-conversation, stealthily pressed her call button without either Kathy or I noticing. Within seconds, the nurses' station asked pleasantly through the intercom, "Yes, Barbara...what can we do for you."

"I'd like some ice, please" she said simply.

Soon "Sydney" appeared at the door with a bag of ice...our eyes met...and all at once, we both realized we had been ambushed. She blushed, I flushed as she gave the ice to Gram. Turning quickly towards the door, Gram said, "One more thing, Sydney", a smile forming at the left corner of her mouth. "I'd like you to meet my grandson...."

We exchanged pleasantries politely. I glared at Gram. She grinned with satisfaction.

From then on in the hospital, "Erica" (the married, parous nurse) attended to the ice.

..but alas, Gram reports that she has a "cute occupational therapist" that visits the house now. Some things never change. I guess that's just what Grams are for...

I don't think you have to go that far from home to get "fixed up".
