Chapati and Obama

Some of our Kenyan buddies agreed to help us learn how to make chapati, a delicious Kenyan bread served with most meals here, somewhat reminiscent of Indian "naan." It is maize-based and as I found out is smothered with butter, which might just be the secret behind its deliciousness.

Here are some photos of our pre-Inauguration chapati making:

Rolling the dough with my friend, Lea.

Patrick (fellow IU student and hostel roomie) and Marisa (my peds resident from Brown) showing off their chapati

The finished product! Unfortunately, I "burnt" my chapati so it was given a "special plate," forbidden from this chapati stack for dinner. I thought it still tasted pretty delicious.

The IU/Brown/Utah/Oregon family then gathered together to watch the Inauguration live. This was definitely one of the most festive Inauguration events I have been a part of - ironically in Kenya! Sonak, the staff pharmacist from Purdue, made Obama shirts, which said "Progress" and "Change" in Swahili.

It has been very interesting to see the excitement surround Obama's presidency in Kenya. Kenyans are hopeful that Obama, with strong Kenyan roots, will do a lot of good for their country as well. I certainly hope that what he has already done continues. We have had a lot of good conversations about both Kenyan and American politics, a topic which is more acceptable and free here.
